Opposition Protests Cause Deadlock in Odisha Legislative Assembly

The Odisha Legislative Assembly faced severe disruptions during the second and third days of its session as opposition lawmakers from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the Indian National Congress stormed the well of the House. On September 23, proceedings were adjourned after BJD and Congress members chanted slogans and disrupted the session. During this day, Congress MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati threw protest posters onto the Deputy Speaker's table. The government managed to pass a single legislative bill during a brief six-minute window of calm before the final adjournment.

The deadlock continued on September 24, with Deputy Speaker Bhabani Shankar Bhoi adjourning the session after only 11 minutes. BJD members demanded the resignation of the School and Mass Education Minister over errors in school textbooks. Simultaneously, Congress MLAs protested the Central Government's amended Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, arguing that the legislation drains state mineral revenues.

Beyond the chamber, Congress lawmakers held a sit-in demonstration near the Mahatma Gandhi statue on the Assembly premises. They protested farmer distress, unemployment, and deteriorating law and order, alleging that the administration suppresses public voice within the legislative chamber.
