GAME and Matalan Close Stores Amid UK High Street Decline

Multiple national chains are reducing their physical footprints across the UK high street. GAME is scheduled to close its final three remaining branches in Dudley, Sutton, and Lancaster in April 2026. While the retailer will vanish from the high street, it intends to maintain a presence through concession stands.

Fashion brand Matalan closed its South Lakeland Retail Park store in Kendal on April 7, its fourth closure of the year following shutdowns in Leeds, Carlisle, and Colne. Despite these closures, Matalan plans to refurbish 40 outlets in 2026, supported by a £25 million funding injection.

Similarly, Lakeland Leather is closing branches in Kendal, Carlisle, and Gretna, citing expiring leases and rising costs. Managing Director of GAME Nick Arran noted the necessity of being realistic about the decline of physical gaming sales, though he maintains that the company will continue to serve collectors and gift-buyers.
