WhatsApp Tests Real-Time Green Dot Activity Indicator

WhatsApp is testing a real-time green dot online indicator for iPhone and Android beta users to show when contacts are actively using the app.

The messaging platform WhatsApp is testing a real-time online status indicator that displays a small green dot at the bottom-right of a contact's profile photo. The feature, currently available for Android beta users and select iOS beta users in version 26.26.10.72, allows users to see when a contact is active the moment they open the app. The indicator disappears immediately upon the user going offline.

Currently, the green dot is only visible within the Contact Info screen, though it may be expanded to the main chat list. To maintain privacy, the indicator adheres to existing user settings; those who have hidden their online status will not display the dot. This update aims to provide a more immediate alternative to the Last Seen status, aligning the platform with competitors like Telegram and iMessage.

Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, is also reportedly developing a dedicated Contacts hub to increase visibility for active users. Additionally, WhatsApp is testing a usernames feature to enable connections without sharing phone numbers, though some authorities have requested a review of this tool due to potential impersonation risks by scammers.
