Google Beta Tests Native Gemini App for macOS

Google has entered a private, invite-only beta testing phase for a dedicated Gemini application for macOS, internally codenamed Janus. The move aims to provide a native desktop experience to compete with similar applications from OpenAI and Anthropic.

A central component of the app is Desktop Intelligence, which allows the AI to see screen content and extract information from other active applications, such as Calendar, to provide personalized assistance. Early versions of the app mirror the Gemini mobile interface and include capabilities for web search, document analysis, and the generation of images, video, music, and charts using models like Nano Banana, Veo, and Lyria.

Google has not yet announced a formal shipping timeline, though industry observers suggest a potential announcement during the Google I/O event on May 19–20. This development occurs alongside a multiyear partnership with Apple to integrate Gemini models into a revamped Siri experience expected later in 2026.
