Southwest Airlines to Launch First Airport Lounges by 2027

Southwest Airlines announced plans to open its first-ever airport lounges starting in late 2027. The airline is partnering with JPMorgan Chase to launch the facilities and will introduce a new co-branded credit card in 2027 to grant customer access. Initial lounges are scheduled for Austin, Baltimore, Honolulu, and Nashville.

This shift follows pressure from activist investor Elliott Investment Management and serves as part of a broader strategy to diversify revenue and move away from a strictly low-cost image. The carrier is implementing several product enhancements, including the introduction of assigned seating and extra-legroom seats.

CEO Bob Jordan indicated that the airline may eventually introduce long-haul international flights and true first class cabins. These measures aim to prevent the loss of customers to competitors that offer more extensive premium amenities.
