US Army Abruptly Removes V Corps Commander Charles Costanza

The United States Army confirmed on Friday that Lt. Gen. Charles Costanza was abruptly removed from his command of V Corps. The action occurred in recent days, approximately two months before Costanza was scheduled to depart the position in October.

Maj. Gen. Thomas Feltey, who had already been Senate-confirmed to take over the command in October, will now replace Costanza. Brig. Gen. John B. Mountford is currently serving as the acting commanding general. V Corps is responsible for coordinating Army forces across Europe and managing the military footprint along NATO frontlines, including operations in Poland.

A source familiar with the matter stated the removal was not politically motivated nor part of a broader effort by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to reshape senior military leadership. This clarification comes as more than two dozen other high-ranking officers have been sidelined under Hegseth's tenure. The removal follows recent strategic movements, including President Donald Trump's announcement regarding the positioning of 5,000 troops in Poland.
