Menomonie Halts $1.6 Billion AI Datacenter Project
Former Mayor Randy Knaack paused a $1.6 billion AI datacenter project in Menomonie, Wisconsin, following intense community backlash over secrecy and environmental concerns.
Former Mayor Randy Knaack halted a proposed $1.6 billion AI hyperscale datacenter project in Menomonie, Wisconsin, after intense community backlash. The development was proposed by Balloonist LLC, a Delaware-incorporated shell company, and was managed in secrecy through nondisclosure agreements signed by city administrator Eric Atkinson and public works director David Schofield.
Residents protested the project over concerns regarding water consumption, noise pollution, and a lack of transparency. In response to the public sentiment, the city council passed a restrictive zoning ordinance in January 2026. While Knaack successfully paused the development, the controversy contributed to his loss in the April 2026 re-election.
Following the election, Mayor Matthew Crowe declined to meet with representatives from Balloonist LLC to avoid being unduly influenced. Despite the pause, Balloonist LLC retains ownership of the land and has recently attempted to contact city staff to revisit the development. The situation in Menomonie mirrors a national trend of resistance to AI datacenters, with various U.S. cities and states implementing moratoriums or bans.
