Philippine Stock Exchange Predicts Brokerage Consolidation Over Capital Rules

The Philippine Stock Exchange expects a decrease in brokerage firms if the Securities and Exchange Commission raises capitalization requirements for the industry.

The Philippine Stock Exchange anticipates a reduction in the number of active stock brokerage firms if the Securities and Exchange Commission implements a plan to increase capitalization requirements. The market currently hosts 121 brokerage firms, which is the highest number in the region, despite the market having a small number of listed companies and low trading volumes.

President and CEO Ramon Monzon stated that the higher capital demands will likely lead some brokers to cease operations. He characterized the resulting industry consolidation as a positive development, noting that it is beneficial for risk management purposes.
