Chinese AI and Semiconductor Stocks Lose $480 Billion
Chinese artificial intelligence and semiconductor stocks crashed, erasing $480 billion in market value amid US ban threats and concerns over AI demand.
Chinese artificial intelligence and semiconductor stocks have crashed, ending a two-year rally and erasing approximately $480 billion in market value. The mainland STAR50 index fell 40% in less than four months, while the broad blue-chip index dropped about 20% from June highs.
The China Securities Regulatory Commission and other market participants are addressing the volatility, which was driven by high valuations, concerns over AI demand, and the threat of the United States banning Chinese equipment from data centers. Retail favorites suffered significant losses, including robot-maker Unitree, whose shares halved in value since August, and chipmakers ChangXin Memory Technologies, MetaX Integrated Circuits, and Moore Threads Technology.
The collapse stalls Beijing's efforts to encourage domestic savers to fund the AI boom and transition toward a stable slow bull market. While some analysts identify buying opportunities, others warn the sector faces an eventual price war. In response to the crash, the China Securities Regulatory Commission met with market participants to discuss improving capital market structures.
