Conflict and Floods Displace Millions Across Sudan

The International Organization for Migration reports that intensified fighting and seasonal floods are compounding a humanitarian crisis that has displaced 8.6 million people in Sudan.

The International Organization for Migration reports that intensified fighting and drone strikes in the Kordofan region have displaced more than 200,000 people since late 2025. In el-Obeid, drone attacks on the main power transformer have caused prolonged electricity outages, which have disrupted hospitals, telecommunications, and water pumping services.

This violence is compounded by seasonal flooding in North Darfur, where nearly 1,350 homes were damaged in the Tawila area. The broader conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces has displaced 8.6 million people and killed at least 59,000 since April 2023. Additional displacements were reported in West Darfur and the Blue Nile state.

IOM Director General Amy Pope warned that the combined impact of infrastructure damage, violence, and floods is stretching families beyond their limits. While the IOM recently delivered 1,750 metric tons of supplies, relief efforts remain hindered by global supply chain delays in the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea.
