Iran Faces Infrastructure Collapse Amid War and Internet Shutdown

The Government of Iran is managing a systemic collapse of national infrastructure and economic stability following a war launched by the United States and Israel in February 2026. This conflict, following a prior shorter engagement with Israel, resulted in hundreds of billions of dollars in damages to civilian targets, including ports, water facilities, and power stations, leading to chronic water shortages and electricity blackouts.

Economic distress has intensified with inflation reaching nearly 90 percent and food inflation climbing to 134 percent. The national currency has hit record lows, while residents in Tehran face doubled bread prices and skyrocketing rents. To maintain internal control, the state has implemented the longest internet shutdown in history, spanning three months.

Authorities have simultaneously targeted social and digital spaces to suppress dissent. In Tehran, the government ordered the closure of cafes and erased the digital platforms of football commentator Adel Ferdosipour after he criticized the national football team.
