Ilhan Omar Questions HSI Agent Presence at Town Hall

U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar sent a formal letter to the Department of Homeland Security and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) leadership questioning why an undercover agent was stationed outside her August 6 town hall in Richfield, Minnesota.

A Richfield police officer discovered a woman in a Ford Explorer with mismatched license plates monitoring the community center. When questioned, the woman initially claimed to be event security before identifying herself as an HSI agent conducting a nearby undercover drug operation. Omar noted that local law enforcement had not been notified of any such operation prior to the discovery.

In her inquiry to HSI's interim special agent in charge, Michael McCarthy, Omar questioned how the agency learned of the meeting and whether the agent's presence was truly related to drug trafficking. She characterized the incident as a waste of local police resources and a poor choice of location for a raid.

Omar further alleged that the incident highlights concerns that the Trump administration uses U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to surveil political opponents and interfere with democracy. Neither the Richfield Police Department nor U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement immediately responded to requests for comment.
