The New York Times Company grew its paid subscriber base to 13.8 million in the third quarter and expressed interest in acquiring Letterboxd.

The New York Times Company added 420,000 digital-only subscribers in the third quarter, increasing its total paid subscriber base to 13.8 million. This growth supports the company's target of reaching 15 million subscribers by the end of 2027 across its news, Wirecutter, Cooking, Games, and The Athletic platforms.

Total revenue for the quarter rose 9.7 percent year-over-year to $768.5 million, while adjusted operating profit increased to $149.6 million. Digital subscription revenue grew 14.6 percent to $421.3 million and digital advertising revenue rose 12 percent. In contrast, print subscriptions continued to decline, falling to 540,000.

Chief Executive Meredith Kopit Levien attributed the subscriber growth to strong engagement and retention. The company reported $1.26 billion in cash and marketable securities as of September and has expressed interest in acquiring the film social platform Letterboxd.
