RBA Deputy Governor Warns of Worsening Inflation Outlook
Andrew Hauser warns that Australia's inflation outlook has worsened materially, increasing the likelihood of an interest rate hike in early November.
Reserve Bank of Australia Deputy Governor Andrew Hauser stated that the nation's inflation outlook is materially worse than the bank's August forecast. Speaking at an investment bank conference in Sydney, Hauser attributed the increased pressure to rising oil costs, persistent domestic capacity pressures, and a boom in data center construction within Australia. He specifically noted that higher AI and technology prices are feeding into the Consumer Price Index.
Hauser indicated that the central bank faces hard choices as it balances the need to combat entrenched inflation psychology against a weakening labor market, where unemployment has reached a five-year high of 4.7%. While high petrol prices and existing interest rates are weighing on domestic activity, strong economic growth among Asian trading partners continues to complicate the outlook.
These warnings increase the likelihood of a fifth interest rate hike, potentially raising rates to 4.85%. The Reserve Bank of Australia's monetary policy board is scheduled to meet beginning November 2 to determine the next course of action.
