Tech Giants Sue California Over Youth Social Media Law
Google, Meta, and TikTok filed lawsuits to block a California law prohibiting psychologically exploitative social media features for children under 16.
Google, Meta Platforms, and TikTok filed separate lawsuits on Wednesday to block the enforcement of California's Assembly Bill 1709. Signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom on September 10, the legislation prohibits social media platforms from providing children under 16 with psychologically exploitative features, including personalized recommendations and autoplay, to prevent compulsive use.
The tech companies filed their legal challenges in San Jose, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. They argue that the law violates Section 230 of the federal Communications Decency Act and the First Amendment's free speech protections. The companies claim the state is overriding editorial curation and parental judgment.
These lawsuits come as the platforms face thousands of other legal actions from individuals and government entities alleging that their services contributed to a youth mental health crisis.
