Ukrainian Combat Medic and Captain Marry in Kramatorsk Combat Zone

Volunteer combat medic Tetiana and battle captain Oleksandr married in Kramatorsk, Ukraine, on August 29, 2026. The ceremony coincided with the 35th anniversary of Ukraine's independence and took place in Peace Square, a location recently designated as part of a combat zone as Russian forces advance in the Donetsk region.

Due to the security environment, the couple conducted the ceremony via a video call with an officiant. They navigated city streets covered in anti-drone netting during a period of heightened tension, following reports of Russian Rubicon drone unit deployments and recent shelling in the city that killed six people.

The couple described the wedding as an act of memory and hope intended to preserve the identity of the Donetsk region against Russian efforts to destroy it. The Ministry of Justice of Ukraine reported that 38% of marriages in the country were conducted online during the first half of the year.
