Israel Defense Forces Link Gaza Kites to Hamas Direction

The Israel Defense Forces identified four kites launched from Gaza by children under Hamas direction, sparking fears among border residents of a return to kite terrorism.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) located four kites that crossed from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory between August 21 and 23, 2026. One kite was discovered Friday near Kibbutz Nahal Oz, followed by three others the next morning. While the military initially stated it could not confirm the origin, it later assessed that the kites were launched from northern Gaza by children and teenagers acting under the direction of Hamas commanders.

Examinations revealed no explosives, incendiary devices, or tracking technology, though some kites featured strings several kilometers long and bore Arabic messages, including "We will never calm down." The IDF maintains that no suspicious items were found and there was no danger to the public. However, security officials are monitoring whether Hamas is using the launches to scout response times or mimic fiber-optic drone tactics used by Hezbollah.

Residents of border communities, including Kibbutz Be’eri and Moshav Shuva, expressed alarm that these incidents mirror "kite terror" tactics used between 2018 and 2021 to gauge landing sites before deploying arson kites. Uri Epstein, head of the Sha’ar HaNegev Regional Council, and advocacy groups like Future for the Gaza Envelope and Atid LaOtef demanded that the military intercept such objects in real time. They warned that a lack of immediate response sends a message that such incursions are acceptable and could lead back to the policy of restraint that preceded the October 7 attacks.
