Google Expands Voluntary Employee Buyouts to Five More Countries

Google expanded its voluntary employee buyout program to Canada, France, Germany, Japan, and Switzerland to cut costs and prioritize AI and cloud computing investments.

Google expanded its voluntary employee buyout program in June 2025 to include staff in Canada, France, Germany, Japan, and Switzerland. The initiative offers eligible employees severance payments of one month of salary for each year of service, capped at 12 months, for those who no longer align with the company's evolving priorities and work culture.

This expansion follows similar programs introduced previously in the United States and the United Kingdom. The company is using these buyouts to control operating costs and redirect resources toward artificial intelligence and cloud computing. Chief Financial Officer Anat Ashkenazi has identified these sectors as primary hiring priorities, leading the company to exclude employees in Google Cloud and the AI research unit DeepMind from the offers.

The cost-cutting measures come as heavy AI spending has pressured the stock price of parent company Alphabet Inc. and unsettled investors. In Switzerland, where Google maintains a major engineering hub in Zurich, employees began leaving in August following the mid-June announcement. This trend is mirrored across the technology industry, with Microsoft recently offering voluntary buyouts to approximately 60,000 employees across the United States, Canada, India, and the United Kingdom.
