Pete Hegseth Considers Sean Parnell for Army Secretary

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is considering his chief spokesperson and senior adviser, Sean Parnell, to serve as the next Army secretary. The potential appointment follows months of influence battles and tension between Hegseth and current Army Secretary Dan Driscoll. While Driscoll is an ally of Vice President JD Vance, he is expected to depart the Pentagon by Labor Day.

The White House has requested that Driscoll remain in his post at least through the November midterm elections, though he remains open to resigning. Parnell, who has served as the top Pentagon spokesperson since February 2025 and chairs the Afghanistan Withdrawal Special Review Panel, is viewed as a candidate who would strengthen Hegseth's control over the armed forces and advance a goal of purging senior military officials to remake the Department of Defense.

Parnell is a former congressional candidate who ended a 2022 Senate campaign following a custody battle. During those proceedings, a judge found "credible evidence" for allegations that Parnell choked and strangled his wife and abused their children. Parnell has denied these accusations. Other Pentagon officials describe him as a shortlist candidate capable of bringing "transformational leadership" to the Army, while a senior administration official stated he remains focused on his current appointment.
