Omar Abdullah Leads National Conference Protest for Statehood in Delhi

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and the National Conference will protest in New Delhi on July 20 to demand the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's statehood.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and the National Conference (NC) will lead a protest in New Delhi on July 20 to demand the restoration of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir. The demonstration is timed to coincide with the start of Parliament's Monsoon session. Abdullah confirmed that he and party legislators will travel to the capital on July 19, asserting that while the venue or mode of the protest may change if permission for Jantar Mantar is denied, the decision to raise their voice in Delhi remains unchanged.

Abdullah maintained the schedule despite the recent death of his uncle, Sheikh Mustafa Kamal, noting that party president Farooq Abdullah directed political programs to continue. The movement has gained broader support as the Indian National Congress announced it will join the New Delhi sit-in. The Jammu and Kashmir Congress also scheduled a dharna in Jammu on July 19, with Tariq Hamid Karra warning of a statehood yatra from Lakhanpur to Lolab if the central government fails to fulfill its promises.

Other political tensions are emerging simultaneously. Groups of Kashmiri Pandits, including Panun Kashmir, have planned a separate July 20 protest at Jantar Mantar to demand a separate homeland and justice for the 1990 exodus. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Jammu and Kashmir intends to hold a Secretariat gherao on July 20 to protest the Abdullah government's outsourcing policy and alleged "backdoor" appointments of 25,000 youth.
