China New Yuan Loans Contract Record 340 Billion Yuan

China's new yuan loans fell by a record 340 billion yuan in July amid a property crisis and weak household credit demand.

China's new yuan loans experienced a record contraction of 340 billion yuan ($50.4 billion) in July 2026, significantly missing analyst expectations of a 45 billion yuan increase. This marks the second such decline this year, following a contraction in April. Total new loans from January to July reached 10.38 trillion yuan, down from 12.87 trillion yuan during the same period in 2025.

People's Bank of China attributed the decline to seasonal factors, a persistent property market crisis, and weak household credit demand, with household loans specifically shrinking by 460.3 billion yuan. The credit weakness coincides with July contractions across China's factory, services, and construction sectors.

While the central bank pledged to maintain a loose monetary stance and implement practical measures, it has not signaled explicit policy rate cuts or reserve-requirement ratio reductions. The Government of China has pledged to bolster growth by accelerating fiscal spending on approved infrastructure projects to counter the economic slowdown.
