Hakeem Jeffries Rejects DSA Agenda and Medicare for All
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries denounced the Democratic Socialists of America platform and Medicare for All, sparking a public divide with the party's progressive wing.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries explicitly rejected the policy platform of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) during an interview on NBC's "Meet the Press" on August 16, 2026. Jeffries stated he no longer supports Medicare for All and denounced proposals to defund the police, maintain open borders, or abolish the Senate, arguing that the party should instead focus on reducing the cost of living.
While Jeffries advocated for dramatic reforms to the Supreme Court and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), he stopped short of supporting the full abolition of ICE. This position contrasted with Representative Ro Khanna, who called Medicare for All the most important priority to save lives and increase wages. The internal friction intensified as the Democratic National Committee backed a resolution urging the dissolution of ICE, a move the White House criticized as the work of "extreme radical Democrats."
Despite these policy disagreements, Jeffries described the House Democratic Caucus as a broad coalition and stated he would welcome DSA-backed candidates into the caucus if they win seats in November. He emphasized that his primary objective is flipping seats to secure a House majority and counter the extremism of Donald Trump.
