Mitch McConnell Returns Home After Hospitalization Following Fall

Mitch McConnell, the Republican Senator from Kentucky, announced on August 6, 2026, that he has been discharged from a rehabilitation center to continue his recovery at home. He was first hospitalized on June 14 after a fall that left him briefly unconscious.

While the Office of the Attending Physician confirmed that McConnell did not suffer a concussion, heart attack, stroke, or bone fractures, he did treat a mild case of pneumonia during his stay. Medical officials noted that childhood polio remains a significant factor in his mobility. McConnell stated he will maintain an intensive regimen of physical therapy from home and continue engaging with staff and colleagues on Senate business, though he has not specified a date for his return to Capitol Hill.

His absence has already impacted legislative progress, as Republicans were unable to advance a farm bill out of committee on Thursday. In response to the prolonged absence, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has called for McConnell to either prove his fitness for office or resign.
