HMRC Clarifies Rent a Room and Blind Person's Allowances

HM Revenue and Customs detailed tax-free allowance rules for the Rent a Room Scheme and the Blind Person's Allowance.

HM Revenue and Customs provided guidance on two specific tax-free allowance schemes for eligible taxpayers. Under the Rent a Room Scheme, homeowners can earn up to £7,500 per year tax-free by letting out furnished accommodation in their homes. This threshold is reduced to £3,750 for individuals who share the income with another person.

Taxpayers earning below the Rent a Room threshold receive the exemption automatically. However, those who exceed the limit must file a Self Assessment tax return to opt into the scheme.

Separately, the agency detailed the Blind Person's Allowance, which offers an additional tax-free amount for individuals registered as legally blind or severely sight impaired. This allowance is added to the standard Personal Allowance. If the eligible individual does not earn enough to utilize the full amount, the remaining allowance can be transferred to a spouse or civil partner.
