Maharashtra Government Accepts All Tribal Student Demands

The Government of Maharashtra accepted all demands from tribal students who conducted hunger strikes in Pune, Nagpur, and Nashik. The protests were sparked by the deaths of three tribal girls from snakebites at a residential school in the Gadchiroli district.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis met with student delegations and committed to a time-bound program to recruit for 12,500 posts and resolve Scheduled Tribes' placement in government point rosters. To improve safety and quality at tribal residential schools, the state agreed to implement third-party audits. Additionally, the government cancelled the direct benefit transfer scheme and pledged to remove employees who obtained jobs without valid caste certificates starting August 30.

The Bombay High Court intervened during the demonstrations, directing the state to ensure the well-being of the hunger strikers to prevent further loss of life.
