Bangladesh Restores Industrial Gas Supplies After Terminal Accident

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman announced that industrial gas supplies in Bangladesh would return to levels seen six weeks prior by September 15, 2026. The shortage resulted from an accident at one of the country's two floating LNG terminals, a technical failure the government has since resolved.

During meetings with business leaders and media personalities in Dhaka, Rahman described the energy sector's struggles as inherited problems. To prevent future deficits, the government is planning a third floating LNG terminal on a government-to-government basis, targeting a December 2027 connection date. Rahman stated that stable energy is critical for Bangladesh to reach its goal of a US$1 trillion economy by 2034.

By the afternoon of September 15, Petrobangla reported that gas supplied to the grid rose to 260.6 crore cubic feet, up from 234.53 crore cubic feet on Monday. While gas pressure returned to normal levels in the Chattogram region, business leaders noted that improvements were still pending in several areas, including Dhaka, Gazipur, and Narayanganj. Industry leaders expect most industrial zones to return to normalcy by September 16.
