Feminist Icon Gloria Steinem Dies at 92

Journalist and activist Gloria Steinem, a central figure in the American feminist movement, died Wednesday at her New York City home at the age of 92. Her death was announced via Instagram on Thursday, prompting a wave of tributes from political leaders, celebrities, and civil rights organizations.

Steinem co-founded Ms. Magazine in 1972 to provide a national platform for feminist ideas and helped establish the National Women’s Political Caucus, the Women’s Action Alliance, and the Women’s Media Center. Throughout her career, she championed reproductive freedom, the Equal Rights Amendment, and intersectional feminism, working to ensure the movement included Black, Indigenous, and LGBTQ individuals.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton described Steinem as an architect of women's equality, while former Vice President Kamala Harris praised her investment in young women and the next generation of leaders. Other tributes came from New York Governor Kathy Hochul, who called her a quintessential New Yorker, and the LGBTQ advocacy organization GLAAD, which recognized her as a titan of civil rights.

Steinem's final book, "An Unexpected Life," is scheduled for publication on September 22. In lieu of flowers, her representatives have requested donations to Gloria’s Foundation.
