Greens Leader Proposes Tax Cuts Amid Internal Misconduct Probe

David Shoebridge proposed raising the tax-free threshold while criticizing Senator Jordon Steele-John's response to allegations of inappropriate behavior toward women.

Greens leader David Shoebridge proposed raising the Australian tax-free threshold from $18,200 to $26,000 during a Wednesday appearance at the National Press Club. He suggested funding the increase through a resource rent tax and a 25 percent gas export tax.

Labor Minister Murray Watt rejected the proposal, stating the government would not work with Shoebridge on tax policy. Watt asserted that the next election would present a choice between a Labor government or a coalition consisting of the Liberals, Nationals, and One Nation.

Shoebridge also addressed internal party turmoil, criticizing Senator Jordon Steele-John for using social media to defend himself against allegations of inappropriate behavior toward women. While Steele-John has denied wrongdoing, he remains on leave from parliament. Shoebridge stated that an independent inquiry is the only appropriate way to resolve the matter, as the state Greens branch in Western Australia continues its probe.
