Tech Giants Invest Billions in MEA AI Infrastructure

Amazon, Microsoft, and OpenAI are investing billions in data centers across Saudi Arabia and the UAE to expand AI capabilities and local data compliance.

Amazon Web Services is leading a surge of technology investment in the Middle East and Africa to meet growing demand for AI capabilities and local data compliance. The company announced a $5.3 billion investment to develop new data centers in Saudi Arabia.

In the United Arab Emirates, Microsoft is investing $1.5 billion through a partnership with G42 to enhance data infrastructure. Simultaneously, OpenAI is collaborating with G42 to build a 1-gigawatt AI data center in Abu Dhabi, marking the organization's first major international infrastructure project.

The regional data center market, valued at $8.63 billion in 2024, is projected to grow to $19.89 billion by 2030. However, the expansion faces significant hurdles, including a shortage of skilled professionals and the need for advanced cooling solutions to manage high energy consumption in hot climates.
