Indonesia and Thailand Set $20 Billion Trade Target

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto hosted Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul in Jakarta on August 3, 2026, for the first official visit by a Thai prime minister to Indonesia in 15 years. The leaders formally adopted the Indonesia-Thailand Strategic Partnership Roadmap 2026–2030, a framework aimed at enhancing security, economic development, and socio-cultural cooperation.

Central to the visit was the announcement of a bilateral trade target of US$20 billion by 2030. To achieve this, the nations established a Joint Trade Commission to resolve trade barriers and launched the Indonesia-Thailand Energy Forum to accelerate sustainable energy transitions. Cooperation also extends to food security through agricultural technology, the development of halal value chains, and the use of Local Currency Transaction frameworks to reduce exchange-rate volatility.

Beyond economics, the leaders expanded connectivity by announcing new direct flight routes between Jakarta and Bangkok, and Denpasar and Phuket. President Prabowo proposed increased joint military exercises and educational personnel exchanges to strengthen ASEAN stability. During the meetings at Merdeka Palace, Prabowo expressed condolences for the passing of Princess Bajrakitiyabha, while Prime Minister Charnvirakul offered sympathy following a passenger ship fire off the coast of East Java.
