Sorin Grindeanu Calls for Extraordinary Romanian Parliament Session

Sorin Grindeanu, President of the Social Democratic Party, has called for an extraordinary session of the Romanian Parliament to begin on July 27. He convened the Standing Bureau of the Chamber of Deputies and requested that Senate President Mircea Abrudean convene a simultaneous session in the upper chamber to address urgent legislative needs, including bills related to the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.

Grindeanu's push follows his proposal to establish a cross-party crisis committee and working group to navigate an unprecedented institutional deadlock. He warned that the absence of a government with full powers has paralyzed state institutions, resulting in stalled hiring at children's hospitals and a frozen real estate market following cyberattacks on the National Cadastral Agency. He specifically cautioned that without urgent legislation, homeowners could face a VAT increase from 9% to 21% starting August 1.

To resolve the crisis, Grindeanu invited all party leaders in Parliament to form an informal working group to prepare emergency amendments and solutions. He urged political actors to set aside disputes to ensure the functioning of the state and protect the interests of voters.
