BMW to Cut 8,000 Global Jobs by 2027

BMW will reduce its global workforce by approximately 8,000 positions by the end of 2027. The company reached this decision following six weeks of negotiations between its board and the works council.

Starting in October, BMW will offer voluntary redundancy packages to roughly 40,000 of its 85,000 permanent German employees. The program specifically targets desk-based roles, while production line workers will be spared from the cuts.

These cost-cutting measures follow a profit warning attributed to a sluggish economy and fierce competition in China, where vehicle deliveries dropped 30 percent year-on-year in the quarter ending in June. The move aligns with broader industry trends affecting other German automakers, such as Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz, which are implementing their own workforce reductions due to slim electric vehicle margins and U.S. tariffs.
