Sony Offers Up to $400 for PS5 Trade-Ins
Sony is partnering with Back Market to offer PlayStation 5 owners in the U.S. and U.K. cash for unused consoles and controllers.
Sony Interactive Entertainment is encouraging PlayStation 5 owners in the United States and United Kingdom to trade in unused consoles for cash through a partnership with the refurbisher Back Market. Notifications sent via the PlayStation app offer up to $400 or £300 for a standard PS5 console in pristine condition accompanied by at least two controllers.
Payments are deposited directly into the seller's bank account within five business days rather than provided as store credit. Final valuations depend on the hardware model, storage capacity, and physical condition. Critics note the offer is less generous than the cost of new hardware, as a standard console with two controllers currently costs approximately £610.
Industry analysts suggest the initiative aims to move dormant hardware to new users who will generate recurring revenue through PlayStation Store purchases and PlayStation Plus subscriptions. This strategy appears timed ahead of the November 19, 2026, release of Grand Theft Auto VI. The program also comes amid rising hardware prices and a memory crisis affecting the availability of the PS5 Pro.
