Google and Nvidia Launch AI Energy Management Alliance

Google, Nvidia Corporation, and Emerald AI launched the AI Energy Management Alliance (AEMA) on September 16, 2026. The coalition, which includes 18 to 20 partners such as Anthropic, Analog Devices, and utilities like National Grid and AES, aims to transform power-intensive data centers into flexible grid assets. These facilities will dynamically adjust electricity consumption through workload shifting, battery discharge, or on-site generation to relieve grid stress and prevent blackouts.

The alliance is lobbying state and federal regulators, including the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, for a grand bargain. AEMA proposes that data centers receive faster and larger grid connections in exchange for acting as good citizens that support grid reliability and lower utility rates for local communities. This initiative responds to projections that global data center power demand could reach 500 GW by 2030, with the AEMA aiming to unlock approximately 100 GW of potential capacity without requiring proportional grid expansion.

To demonstrate the model, Nvidia Corporation, Emerald AI, and Digital Realty are developing the first ground-up power-flexible AI factory. The 100-megawatt facility in Manassas, Virginia, is scheduled to begin operations before the end of 2026. The project will utilize Emerald AI's Conductor software and Nvidia Corporation's Vera Rubin architecture to orchestrate flexible workloads.
