Iran Plans Undersea Cable Attacks if US Israel Strike
The Government of Iran has developed plans to target undersea communications cables and AI facilities in retaliation for potential US and Israeli attacks.
The Government of Iran has developed detailed plans to target undersea communications cables in the Gulf if the United States and Israel launch renewed attacks against the country. Yadollah Javani, deputy head of political affairs for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, identified seven major internet cables beneath the Strait of Hormuz as specific targets.
Iranian officials stated they intend to prevent repairs following any strikes to prolong disruptions to internet and communication services. Top security official Mohsen Rezaei expanded the scope of these threats, warning that US-linked digital infrastructure, including data centers and AI facilities, could also be targeted.
While analysts suggest that strikes in the Strait of Hormuz would have limited global impact because less than 1% of international bandwidth passes through that area, the threats are viewed as a strategy to pressure the United States. By endangering regional investments made by US technology firms and Gulf governments, Iran aims to create economic and diplomatic leverage.
