Hong Kong and Shenzhen Open Redeveloped Huanggang Port

Hong Kong and Shenzhen opened the redeveloped Huanggang Port on October 12, featuring a joint inspection system that reduces customs clearance times to under five minutes.

The redeveloped Huanggang Port, a 24-hour land boundary control point linking Shenzhen and Hong Kong, officially opened at 6:30 am on October 12, 2026. As the world's largest land port complex, the facility covers approximately 690,000 square meters and follows a seven-year renovation process that began in 2019.

John Lee Ka-chiu and other officials highlighted the implementation of a "joint inspection and one-time release" system. This collaborative model reduces customs clearance times for passengers and vehicles from 30 minutes to under five minutes, with some automated clearances taking as little as 20 seconds. The port's daily capacity has increased from 50,000 to 200,000 trips, with the potential to handle 300,000 during peak periods.

The project aims to strengthen connectivity within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, specifically linking the Northern Metropolis in Hong Kong with the Hetao Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation Zone. The facility includes integrated transport links, such as direct access to Shenzhen Metro Line 7.

Following the opening, Hong Kong is hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Finance Ministers' Meeting for the first time. Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po stated the meeting will focus on digital infrastructure financing, inclusive finance for small and medium-sized companies, and youth exchanges in finance to affirm the region's status as an international financial center.
