Amnesty International Links Morocco to Global Spyware Campaign
Amnesty International reports that Moroccan intelligence used NSO Group spyware to target activists, journalists, and European politicians for several years.
A report from Amnesty International reveals that Moroccan authorities conducted a years-long surveillance campaign targeting critics, activists, journalists, and human rights defenders. The operation spanned both domestic and international borders, including the targeting of politicians in France and Spain.
The report identifies the Direction Générale de la Surveillance du Territoire as the agency responsible for the operations. According to leaked documents and testimony from a former intelligence official, the agency acquired its surveillance capabilities from European and Israeli firms.
Amnesty International specifically named the NSO Group as a provider of the technology. The software used by the Moroccan intelligence agency is capable of hacking mobile phones to covertly record calls and messages.
