CME Group to Launch AI Compute Power Futures
CME Group is partnering with Silicon Data to launch the first futures contracts tied to AI computing power costs on October 5.
CME Group is partnering with Silicon Data to launch the first futures contracts tied to the cost of artificial intelligence computing power on October 5, pending regulatory approval. These contracts treat AI computing capacity as a tradable commodity, similar to oil or electricity, allowing investors and companies to trade and hedge the rental costs of Nvidia Corp. H100 and Blackwell B200 graphics processing units.
The contracts will utilize Silicon Data indexes that track hourly GPU rental prices, with each individual contract representing one month of rent for an Nvidia Corp. H100. This mechanism provides a public reference price for GPU capacity, which enables AI developers and data-center operators to manage cost volatility.
For Wall Street, the initiative offers a new method to gain exposure to AI infrastructure without requiring direct investment in physical assets or specific companies. The move aims to standardize a market where pricing has historically been opaque.
