Private Equity Firms Bid for Fuji Media Property Unit
Blackstone, Bain Capital, and Warburg Pincus are preparing bids to acquire Fuji Media's property unit in a potential 1 trillion yen deal.
Several global investment firms are preparing final bids to acquire Sankei Building, the property unit of Japanese broadcaster Fuji Media. Blackstone, Bain Capital, and Warburg Pincus are among the firms preparing bids, while BGO, a real estate firm under Canada's Sun Life Financial, plans to submit a binding offer by the end of October.
Fuji Media expects the unit to be valued at approximately 1 trillion yen, or 6.3 billion dollars, including debt. If completed, the transaction would rank as one of the largest real estate takeovers in Japanese history. The divestment comes after pressure from activist investors, including Dalton Investments and funds linked to Yoshiaki Murakami, to offload real estate assets.
While Fuji Media is evaluating the scale and timing of the investment, the process has faced scrutiny from shareholders. Vasanta Master Fund has requested greater transparency regarding asset valuation and the transaction structure, arguing that limiting the pool of buyers to a few large private equity firms may reduce the potential upside for shareholders.
