Roger McNamee Warns AI Infrastructure Spending Is Unsustainable

Technology investor Roger McNamee warns that the current scale of capital investment in large language model AI and supporting infrastructure is unsustainable. Projections indicate the industry will have invested roughly $717 billion over three years by the end of 2025, with some estimates placing total AI-related spending as high as $1.48 trillion.

McNamee points to a significant gap between these infrastructure costs and actual end-user license revenue. While leaders such as OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic saw revenue grow from $1 billion in 2023 to $4 billion in 2024, he argues this growth is insufficient to justify the spending.

He asserts that major US players, including Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Meta, and xAI, are all pursuing a global monopoly. Because of this competition, McNamee predicts many of these companies will inevitably fail and be forced to write off investments totaling hundreds of billions of dollars. He further notes that this risk is compounded by the declining utility of existing monopolies like Meta's Facebook and Google Search.
