Finland President Stubb Dismisses Russian Attack Risks on NATO

Finnish President Alexander Stubb dismissed assessments from German officials suggesting Russia could be positioned to attack NATO territory by 2029. In an interview with the German newspaper Bild, Stubb argued that such an attack would make no sense given the alliance's superior conventional, missile, and nuclear deterrence capabilities.

Stubb cited severe Russian troop depletion in Ukraine as a primary barrier to further aggression, noting that Moscow loses between 30,000 and 35,000 soldiers monthly while recruiting only 27,000. He asserted that Russia is too preoccupied with the conflict in Ukraine to mobilize for a second front and characterized Moscow's current rhetoric as information warfare designed to spread alarm and uncertainty across Europe.

Despite his dismissal of an imminent threat, Stubb maintained that the West must continue preparing for the worst to prevent it. He endorsed Ukraine's long-range strikes against Russian oil refineries and logistics to increase the Kremlin's financial burden and force negotiations, stating that a strong Ukraine is the best security guarantee for Europe.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government of Russia has maintained that conflict with NATO would only occur if the bloc launched an aggression first, while warning the United Kingdom and Baltic states of potential retaliation for supporting Ukrainian strikes.
