Russian and Algerian Forces Help Niger Junta Quell Mutiny

Nigerien security forces, supported by Russian and Algerian military assets, suppressed a violent military mutiny in Niamey between August 29 and 30, 2026. The uprising began shortly after midnight on Saturday with coordinated attacks on the presidential palace, the state broadcaster Tele Sahel, and Air Base 101 at Diori Hamani International Airport. Mutineers, identified as hundreds of disaffected soldiers from frontline regions, took fellow servicemen hostage and briefly disrupted national broadcasts.

Abdourahamane Tiani and his military junta maintained power through a joint air-ground offensive. The Russian-backed Africa Corps provided critical ground and aerial support to recapture Air Base 101, while the Government of Algeria deployed four Sukhoi Su-30 fighter jets and transport aircraft to Niamey as a show of strategic support. Defense Minister General Salifou Mody reported that the situation was contained, resulting in dozens of rebel soldiers being killed or arrested.

The mutiny was driven by soldier frustration over poor welfare, inadequate equipment, and heavy casualties suffered while fighting Al-Qaeda and Islamic State affiliates. The Alliance of Sahel States characterized the event as a "betrayal by a group of soldiers involved in a destabilisation plot". This unrest marks the most significant internal challenge to the junta since the July 2023 coup and underscores Niger's growing security dependence on Russia as it pivots away from Western partners.
