Georgetown County Council Proposes Sales Tax for Property Tax Relief

The Georgetown County Council gave initial approval on July 21 to place a local option sales tax (LOST) measure on the November 3 ballot. The proposed one-cent levy on most retail items is projected to generate approximately $10 million annually, with 71% to 79% of the revenue dedicated to property tax rollbacks for homes, vehicles, and boats. The remaining funds would support county operations and community projects.

Council Chairman Clint Elliott cited a recent countywide reassessment that increased property taxes as a primary driver for the proposal. The measure exempts groceries and prescriptions, effectively shifting the tax burden toward tourists and visitors. County Administrator Angela Christian noted that this approach allows visitors to contribute to the infrastructure and public services they utilize while making local living more affordable.

This effort follows a 2024 ballot defeat that officials attribute to voter confusion. To prevent similar outcomes, Elliott stated the council intends to ensure voters make an informed decision. The proposal requires two additional readings, with special-called meetings scheduled for August 4 and August 11 in the County Council Chambers before a final vote is taken to place the referendum on the ballot.
