U.S. Job Openings Rise to 7.27 Million in July

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported 7.271 million job openings in July, missing consensus estimates while issuing a significant downward revision for June data.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that job openings increased to 7.271 million in July, up from a revised June figure of 7.2 million. Despite the monthly increase, the total fell short of consensus estimates, which ranged between 7.313 million and 7.358 million, marking the second consecutive month of missing expectations.

The July Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) report included a substantial downward revision for June, reducing job openings by 177,000. This represents the largest negative revision since 2025. While government job openings surged to 810,000, declines were noted in professional services, trade, and transportation.

Other indicators suggest a slump in labor market confidence. Hires fell by 278,000 to 5.054 million, the lowest level since February, and quits dropped by 157,000 to 3.056 million. Analysts indicate that the drop in hires may signal a weakening labor market, potentially leading to a negative payrolls report for August.
