Meta and YouTube Restore Blocked Ads for Musk Documentary
Meta and YouTube reversed decisions to block advertisements for the critical documentary 'Musk' after initially citing political content policies.
Social media platforms initially blocked paid trailer advertisements for 'Musk', a critical documentary directed by Alex Gibney scheduled for release on October 9. Distributor Bleecker Street reported that Meta, TikTok, YouTube, and X rejected the ads, with some platforms treating footage of Elon Musk at a 2024 Donald Trump campaign rally as prohibited political campaign content.
Following reports of the restrictions, Meta and YouTube reversed their positions. Meta characterized the initial rejection as an error and began restoring the ads. YouTube stated the trailer was temporarily restricted by its system but has since been cleared to run. TikTok and X have maintained their restrictions, with X declining to engage with the distributor.
Elon Musk condemned the film as a "hit piece" and "dogs–t," calling Gibney a "horrible human" with "ZERO integrity." Musk has threatened legal action over claims in the film regarding his use of Starlink satellites to influence the 2024 presidential election. Gibney maintains the documentary was independently fact-checked. While produced by HBO/Max, the film's future streaming availability remains uncertain amid a potential takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery by Paramount.
