OpenAI and Anthropic Launch Policies to Address AI Disruption
OpenAI and Anthropic introduced policy blueprints and social initiatives to manage public anxiety over job displacement and systemic risks caused by accelerating AI progress.
AI laboratories OpenAI and Anthropic have launched a series of public relations and policy initiatives to address growing societal anxiety over job displacement, wealth inequality, and cybersecurity. The efforts follow data showing 55% of Americans believe AI will cause more harm than good, according to a Quinnipiac University poll.
OpenAI released a policy blueprint emphasizing societal resilience and the need for enhanced cyber defenses and biological risk detection. Chief Executive Sam Altman stated that the rate of AI progress is accelerating and will lead to significant global disruption. To mitigate these effects, OpenAI proposed a populist policy list including a four-day workweek and an AI-invested public-wealth fund for citizens. Executives also suggested that tax reforms and stronger safety nets may be necessary as AI assumes more intellectual labor.
To shape the technology's narrative, OpenAI acquired the TBPN podcast. Meanwhile, Anthropic established an in-house think tank to study social cohesion and job impacts. The company is also expanding its applied AI engineers team and increasing training and certifications to help organizations integrate productivity tools. Both companies are partnering with consulting firms to transition at-risk workers into proponents of the technology.
