Nigerian Opposition Parties Seek Single Candidate for 2027 Election
Salihu Lukman announced that Nigerian opposition parties are coordinating to field a single joint presidential candidate to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2027.
The convener of the G-100 political pressure group, Salihu Lukman, announced that Nigeria's opposition parties are working to field a single joint presidential candidate for the 2027 general election. The alliance aims to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress and prevent vote splitting among prominent figures such as Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar.
The initiative began with an opposition summit in Ibadan in April 2026, followed by a meeting on August 31 that established five working groups to manage the selection process. Lukman noted that while a trust deficit exists among party leaders, the group is focused on creating a minimum programme of action for the eventual nominee to prioritize rather than merging full party manifestos.
The alliance currently involves more than six political parties. Lukman stated that the consensus candidate could be announced months, weeks, or days before the polls, and the final nominee may come from an existing party or a newly created entity.
