Atiku Abubakar Leads Opposition Poll Amid 2027 Election Debates
Atiku Abubakar emerged as the preferred opposition candidate in a recent poll as Nigerian leaders debate rotational presidency and voter independence for 2027.
An online poll conducted by the Tinubu Must Go movement shows Atiku Abubakar, the African Democratic Congress candidate, as the most preferred opposition candidate for the 2027 presidential election. Abubakar received 73.6 percent of the 109,799 votes cast, significantly outpacing the Nigerian Democratic Congress ticket of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, which secured 22.3 percent.
The results have sparked debate over Nigeria's informal rotational presidency. Former Senator Shehu Sani warned that an Abubakar victory would end the rotation between northern and southern regions, potentially causing bitter feelings in the south. Sani argued that political parties should instead field southern candidates to maintain national unity.
Simultaneously, Cardinal John Onaiyekan urged voters in South-East Nigeria to choose their candidate freely without interference from state governors. This follows comments by Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo, who endorsed President Bola Tinubu and advised the Igbo people against wasting their votes. Onaiyekan also proposed broader electoral reforms, including a 50 percent vote threshold for presidential winners and a more independent appointment process for the Independent National Electoral Commission.
