Over 50 Tall Ships Gather for Sail Boston 2026
Boston hosted more than 50 international vessels and millions of visitors from July 10 to 16 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States.
Sail Boston 2026 commenced on July 10 with an opening ceremony at the Boston Harbor Hotel, featuring a blessing of the sails and a presentation of flags. The event served as the grand finale of Sail250, a nationwide celebration marking the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.
On July 11, Michelle Wu and other city officials welcomed a flotilla of more than 50 international tall ships and military vessels from approximately 20 countries. Led by the USS Constitution and the USCGC Eagle, the Parade of Sail drew an estimated one million spectators to the waterfronts of South Boston, the Seaport, Charlestown, and East Boston. The celebration included a fighter jet flyover and a public festival in the Seaport district. While largely celebratory, the arrival of the Chilean ship Esmeralda drew attention to its history involving political prisoners under Augusto Pinochet.
To manage the crowds, city officials implemented security checkpoints and suspended ferry services on Saturday. The festivities continued through July 14 with the Sail Boston Cup, a five-on-five soccer tournament held in honor of the World Cup. The visiting vessels remained open for public visitation before beginning their departures on July 16.
