Turkiye Submits Law to Disarm and Dissolve PKK Insurgency

The ruling alliance of Turkiye submitted the Law on National Solidarity and Social Integration to parliament on August 5, 2026. The legislation aims to end the decades-long insurgency of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) by facilitating the disarmament and reintegration of thousands of militants and civilians currently based in northern Iraq and Syria.

The bill proposes suspending prison sentences for members not involved in killings or serious violent crimes, offering legal protection to those who return to Turkiye within six months of the law's passage. However, the protections exclude senior leaders and those convicted of aggravated life sentences before 2005, specifically including PKK founder Abdullah Ocalan.

The initiative is supported by the Justice and Development Party, the Nationalist Movement Party, and the pro-Kurdish DEM Party. A committee led by the vice president and the head of the National Intelligence Organization will oversee the disarmament process, with final verification conducted by the national security council.
